On Friday, November 10, the Upper Scioto Valley students and staff got to serve those who define the word service. Local veterans were treated to a breakfast of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, bacon and fried apples prepared by the Henderson family, owners of the 235 Grill of Alger, and served by the honor society.

Following breakfast, there was a school-wide assembly which included musical selections by the USV band as well as the students in the sixth grade, poetry readings by fifth-graders Chelsea Jordan and Olivia Nolting and personal, patriotic essays delivered by eighth-grader Jake Bushong regarding respect for veterans today and every day and senior Miranda Holbrook citing the life lessons of service, sacrifice, selflessness, bravery, and courage from a veteran very near and dear to her heart, her grandfather.  FFA president Garrett Royer announced the Veterans’ Wall to be created in the USV cafeteria is currently underway and seniors Julieann Castle, Miranda Holbrook Trey Risner, and Miranda Webb shared a slide show highlighting each branch of our armed forces and the values of our military.

The keynote address was given by Mrs. Velma Scott, a retired USV teacher, who spoke about her grandson, Navy SEAL Commander Seth Stone. Mrs. Scott explained that her grandson and all the veterans in attendance were being honored for a life of service as part of the armed forces. She said that Commander Stone often explained that his desire to serve was for the love of this country. Mrs. Scott also said that her grandson often told her that “the best life is one lived in service for others.” Mrs. Scott reiterated that Commander Stone had a strong character, faith and determination which she attributed, at least in part to the years he spent at USV schools and in this community.

Following Mrs. Scott’s address, each veteran in attendance was individually recognized for their service, as well as those actively serving, and a moment of silence was held before sophomore Evan Lyle played “Taps”. The assembly ended with the USV band playing “Hymn to the Fallen” from the motion picture Saving Private Ryan. Many institutions held gatherings for veterans on Friday, and at USV, the students and staff are honored to have served as one of them.
